What’s Bournemouth’s gain is Barton’s loss Bournemouth is would famous for its Golden Mile of sand, every year, when its sunny, it attracts thousands of visitors to enjoy the English Summer by the sea. Bournemouth relies entirely on this stretch of coastline for its economy, without the beach Bournemouth would be in crisis. To help make sure that Bournemouth kept its Golden Mile groynes were built on the beach, these stop longshore drift from taking the sand down the beach and away from Bournemouth, this engineering has proved successful in Bournemouth, saving the Golden Mile.
Futher down the coast lies Barton-on-Sea, Barton dosent pull the same crowds that Bournemouth does. The sand that is prevented from coming down to Barton from Bournemouth used to act as a barrier that helped protect Barton’s soft cliffs. Because the sand no longer comes down these cliffs are being eroded away alarmingly quickly. In order to prevent this thousands of tons of boulders were placed at huge expense in front of the cliffs to act as a wave break and absorb the waves energy protecting the cliffs, and in turn saving Barton.
